Turkey is a country located at a place where the 3 continents of the World (Asia, Africa,
and Europe) meet. Because of its geographical location, the mainland of Anatolia has
always attracted the interests of the people throughout the history. It is the birthplace
of many great civilizations. It has also been prominent as a centre of commerce because
of its land connections to three continents and the sea surrounding it on three sides.
Land: The actual area of Turkey inclusive of its lakes 814,578 square kilometers, of which 790,200 are in Asia and 24,378 are located in Europe. Coastline: 8.210km Land borders: Greece and Bulgaria in the north-west, Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Iran in the east, Iraq and Syria in the south-east. DEMOGRAPHICS: According to the most recent general census conducted in 2000, the inhabitants of Turkey reached to 67.8 million. Of the total; nearly, 31,5% is children (0-15 age), 49,5% is adult and 6% is elderly (65+ age). The Big Cities: Turkey has 81 administrative provinces. The main big cities and their populations are Istanbul (10 million), Ankara-the capital (4 million), ‹zmir (3,4 million), Konya (2,2 million), Bursa (2,1 million), Adana (1,9 million), and Antalya (1,7 million). CLIMATE: Turkey enjoys a variety of climates due to the diverse nature of the landscape and the presence of mountains parallel to the coasts. The topography is extremely varied and climatic conditions differ widely among regions. The major part of the country consists of highland plateaus surrounded by mountainous areas, which rise towards the east and are dominated by Mount Ararat a height of 5.165meters. In the east, winter temperatures may fall to -40°C while in south, summer temperatures may reach 45°C. During congress, expected weather in Antalya will be 22-26°C. HOST CITY ANTALYA IN BRIEF: Since its foundation in the 2nd Century BC by Attalus 2nd, a king of Pergamon, who named the city Attaleia, it has had a continuous history. Later, Romans, Byzantines, Seljuks and Ottomans occupied the city. Now it is an attractive city with shady palm-lined boulevards, a prize-winning marina and Kaleiçi, with narrow streets and old wooden houses next to the city walls. Historical and Touristic Places around Antalya: Phaselis: Three harbours denote that the city was a trade center. Demre (Myra): Demre is known for St. Nicholas who died there in 342. Kekova: Kekova is especially enjoyable for the yachtsmen. Patara: A principal harbour of ancient Lycia. It is known to be the birthplace of St. Nicholas. Xanthos: The ancient Lycian capital. Aspendos: Aspendos is the best preserved theatre of antiquity seating 15.000. Side: It is popular because of the ancient ruins and two sand beaches.
